Project Overview<\/h3>\n

Elayo is located in Sanaag Region on Gulf of Aden coastline between Bosaso and Lasqorey. Elaayo is a village in Dhahar district far away from Dhahar around 247km on the north.<\/p>\n

Elayo locates on the latitude of 11.24156 and Longitude of 48.86294 as per GPS Coordinator.<\/p>\n

People living in this village are fishers in the coastal areas, but the difficulties are they don\u2019t have markets to sell for the fishes. Another problem they face is that people here luck the fishing equipment to secure their livelihood and feed their children.<\/p>\n

The propose of the Mangrove transplantation is to increase the livelihood of the targeted community by delivering the food for asset as well as to set asset creation.<\/p>\n

WFP supports the rural infrastructure development and employment generation (partiticipants) to contribute improving rural livelihood, poverty reduction, economic through rehabilitation, construction and maintenance of rural infrastructure using labor-based works method.<\/p>\n

Elayo is one of the coastal villages that have faced the highest level of fishing difficulties mainly resulting from cyclone and overfishing of the foreign shipping known as illegal fishing.<\/p>\n

On the other hand the last Gu 2013 and previously Dayr 2013 was not received, community livnig here in Elaayo get water from Hias and Gebi Godle around 35KM away from the village leading to high price of the water.<\/p>\n

SEDO proposed to do dam in Elayo village and to transplant the Mangrove trees as the elayo valley is good for transplanting the mangroves because of the landscape and soil characteristics it\u2019s been bestowed.<\/p>\n

SEDO has fulfilled the mangrove plantation in ministry of Environment nursery in Bosaso, this project is funded by the WFP from 3 months for food for voucher. Following that SEDO has collected 4000 seedlings and planted in the nursery, then this time transplantation is selected to Elayo.<\/p>\n

SEDO used community participatory approach to identify the participants and emphasized the need for the prioritization of the asset creation of the village as well as to secure the livelihood of the community in terms of job creation.<\/p>\n

SEDO also utilized the communities in selecting the project implementation committee members, whose final duties is control the overall activates of the project and mange the asset created during the project for community to sustain and remain save in long time.<\/p>\n

Eelayo community also reported facing challenges of fresh water for their livestock and also human consumption \u2013 and hence requested excavation of the community dam. this dam will serve different purposes- provision of the needed water for livestock and human consumption, use for the mangrove watering \u2013 as the mangroves needs a combination of both saline ( sea water) and fresh water for their growth. The project as implemented the FFA program, will also help to address the food insecurity challenges in the community as the members who participated in this project also receive food.\u00a0 In terms of seasonality, the project conducted from March 2014 to June 2014, which was the Jilaal season.\u00a0 The mangrove transplantation is feasible throughout the year.<\/p>\n

Social and Environmental Development Org. (SEDO) has implemented food for asset project for up to 400<\/strong>participants in Elaayo Dam and transplantation of Mangrove. (375<\/strong> persons for Dam excavation and 25<\/strong>persons for Mangrove transplantation), as per our agreement with WFP signed jointly in 17\/03\/2014 with project number CP\/SEDO\/062\/FFA\/2014<\/strong> the project duration was four months from 1st<\/sup> March to 30 June 2014.<\/p>\n

With the consultation of the community committee, SEDO has start immediately after contract signed by dividing the workers into sub group including the supervisors and presented the work norms to be aware in all workers.<\/p>\n

As per FFA constructs, the ration scale provided each months was Creeal 75kg, Pulses 10kg, OiL 5.2kg and CSB+ 10kg.<\/p>\n

Objectives<\/h3>\n

  • To provide the needed water for livestock and human consumption,<\/li>\n
  • To use for the mangrove watering as the mangroves needs a combination of both saline ( sea water) and fresh water for their growth<\/li>\n
  • The project contributed to address the food insecurity challenges in the community as the members participate in this project received food<\/li>\n
  • Mangrove transplantation contributed to the environmental conservation efforts in the community<\/li>\n
  • To improve water quality and controlling coastal erosion caused by flooding and storm surges for Mangrove transplantation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
