Addressing Somalia’s Challenges with Hope and Action
Message from The Executive Director
The Horn of Africa faces a complex set of challenges, including recurring droughts, food insecurity, environmental degradation, and displacement driven by conflict and climate change. In Somalia, these pressures have reached critical levels. As of late 2025, over 3.8 million Somalis are internally displaced, and at least 4.4 million people are projected to face high levels of acute food insecurity—a sharp increase from earlier in the year. The country continues to be stalked by the compounding effects of drought, below‑average rainfall, localized flooding, and persistent insurgency, all exacerbated by a severe humanitarian funding crisis that has forced a drastic scale‑back of life‑saving assistance. These challenges disproportionately affect women and marginalized communities, limiting their access to resources, decision‑making, and sustainable livelihood opportunities.
SEDO was established to address these systemic barriers by placing empowerment at the center of development. To reverse the alarming trajectory in Somalia and across the region, SEDO works collaboratively with communities, governments, and international partners to design and implement humanitarian and development‑oriented programs. Our programming is diverse: it covers environmental protection, livelihoods, relief, skills training, protection, nutrition and food security, fishing, natural resource management, social innovation, health, and education. We strive to equip women and vulnerable groups with the skills, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive. Our approach focuses on strengthening resilience, advancing gender equality, and promoting inclusive economic growth.
We believe that sustainable change happens when women are empowered as leaders, innovators, and agents of transformation. By investing in their potential and amplifying their voices, we contribute to building resilient communities where challenges are not only addressed but transformed into opportunities for long‑term development.
