Building Resilient Communities Since 2010
The Social-Life and Economic Development Organization (SEDO) was established in 2010 by a group of committed Somali intellectuals, development practitioners, and community leaders who shared a common vision of promoting sustainable development, environmental conservation, and social progress across Somalia. Prior to its formal registration, the founding members had actively participated in community service initiatives and environmental protection efforts, contributing their expertise and resources to address local challenges.
Recognizing the importance of community-driven development, SEDO was founded on the belief that lasting solutions emerge when communities actively participate in identifying their needs and shaping interventions. Since its inception, the organization has worked closely with local communities to identify social, economic, and environmental challenges and design practical, inclusive, and sustainable solutions.
In its early years, SEDO played a significant role in supporting efforts to reduce and prevent piracy along the Puntland coast by promoting alternative livelihood opportunities for vulnerable youth and coastal communities. Through community engagement, skills development, and economic empowerment initiatives, the organization contributed to broader efforts aimed at fostering stability, resilience, and sustainable economic opportunities.
Over the years, SEDO has expanded its focus to address a wide range of development priorities, including food security, nutrition, sustainable agriculture, livelihoods, environmental conservation, governance, peacebuilding, education, and community resilience. The organization has consistently worked to strengthen collaboration between government institutions, civil society organizations, community leaders, and the private sector to improve service delivery, increase public confidence, and promote inclusive development.
Environmental protection has remained a core pillar of SEDO’s work. The organization has actively advocated for the sustainable management of natural resources and has partnered with local authorities and communities to address environmental degradation, climate-related challenges, and unsustainable practices affecting both terrestrial and marine ecosystems. These efforts include raising awareness about environmental conservation, supporting climate resilience initiatives, and promoting the sustainable use of natural resources for future generations.
Headquartered in Bosaso, Puntland, SEDO possesses the operational capacity to implement programs throughout Somalia. While many of its interventions have been concentrated in Puntland, the organization continues to expand its reach and partnerships to serve communities across the country.
Today, SEDO stands as a trusted local development organization committed to improving the lives of vulnerable populations through innovative, community-centered, and sustainable development programs. As a nonprofit, nonpolitical, and nonpartisan organization, SEDO remains dedicated to empowering communities, strengthening resilience, promoting environmental stewardship, and contributing to a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable Somalia.
SEDO is officially registered with the relevant authorities in Puntland State of Somalia and the Federal Government of Somalia, ensuring compliance with national regulations and reinforcing its commitment to transparency, accountability, and effective development practice.
