The socio-economic indicators in Somalia is troubling. With over 2.6 million people in IDPsand 4.6 million food insecure, by last quarter of 2020, and the effects of droughts, floods, cyclones and locusts’ invasions still stalking the country, let alone political uncertainties and insurgency, Somalia is still in a precarious situation. One may say that the current developments at the Federal Government Level and the unprecedented peace in Puntland should provide reprieve and comforting figures as far as humanitarian crisis is concerned. Actually, nothing could be further from the truth. The underlying factors behind these seeming stability, which must be acknowledged, is that the social safety nets have been depleted by years of environmental and manmade calamities and lack of sustainable livelihood activities. The social indicators and veritable statistics prove this point. These are products of inbuilt social capital. Yet still a lot needs to be done to make use of these opportunities to bring about the envisioned change.
Against all these challenges a lot can still be done to mitigate the impacts of the bottlenecks that impede social growth and enabling effective and equitable delivery of humanitarian interventions in Somalia.
Puntland continues to bear the brunt of the political instabilities, and chaos in the south, hosting hundreds of thousands of refugees who have fled the restive villages and are seeking better opportunities and safety.
SEDO works with likeminded partners to design and implement humanitarian and development-oriented programs that aims to bring about the envisioned social change in the communities. SEDO’s programming are diverse; they cover environmental protections, livelihood, relief, skills training, protection, nutrition and food security, fishing, Natural Resource Management, social innovation, health and education.
We welcome partners and individuals with innovative ideas that can bring about the envisioned social change in our communities. Our hope is that Somalia will soon stabilize and her people find sustainable socio-economic programs that can support their livelihood, upwards social mobility and individual’s social transformation.
