Mangrove Nursery in Bossaso
- Donor: WFP
- Project Duration: 3 Months
- Location: Bossaso
- Mangrove trees planted: 4000
Project Overview
SEDO was also implementing a mangrove nursery in Bossaso town near the airport. The main aim of this nursery was to raise mangrove seedlings – in preparation of a future programme whereby the trees will be transplanted along the sea side in Qaw village and other coastal areas suitable for mangrove plantation. These will contribute towards restoration of the coastal environmental eco-system.
Upon the signature of the FLA, SEDO has started the project at appropriate time. Our initial plan was to put in the nursery about 6000 seeds. (1500 seeds a month), but due to the space of the nursery we have planted so far 3450 seeds filled in the pages, 70% of it have raised, and then transplanted to Elaayo costal area for another project.
SEDO proposed to do dam in Elaayo village and to transplant the Mangrove trees as the Elaayo valley is good for transplanting the mangroves because of the landscape and soil characteristics it’s been bestowed.
SEDO has fulfilled the mangrove plantation in ministry of Environment nursery in Bosaso; this project is funded by the WFP from 3 months for food for voucher. Following that SEDO has collected 4000 seedlings and planted in the nursery, then this time transplantation is selected to Elaayo.
SEDO used community participatory approach to identify the participants and emphasized the need for the prioritization of the asset creation of the village as well as to secure the livelihood of the community in terms of job creation.
