In 2016, Puntland experienced one of its most severe drought crises in recent years. Three consecutive failed rainy seasons, compounded by the El Niño weather phenomenon, caused widespread water scarcity, severe pasture depletion, livestock losses, displacement, and increasing food insecurity across Bari, Nugaal, Sool, Sanaag, and Mudug.
The crisis placed enormous pressure on pastoral and farming communities. As water sources dried up and livestock assets were lost, families were forced to migrate in search of water and pasture. The rising cost of water further increased the vulnerability of affected communities and heightened public health risks.
In response to this devastating natural disaster, SEDO Somalia was among the local organizations that contributed to the humanitarian response, working alongside local authorities, UN agencies, and other humanitarian partners to support communities affected by the drought.
SEDO’s response demonstrated the important role that local organizations play in reaching vulnerable communities during emergencies. Through its field presence and community-based approach, SEDO contributed to efforts aimed at protecting lives and supporting people whose livelihoods and access to basic necessities had been severely affected by the drought.
The experience also reinforced an important lesson; effective humanitarian response is not only about addressing immediate needs, but also about strengthening communities’ ability to withstand future shocks.
