High water salinity has long been one of the major challenges facing farming communities in Bosaso District, limiting crop production and threatening the sustainability of agricultural livelihoods.
For the Farmers’ Cooperative in Laag village, this challenge is now being addressed through a practical water treatment intervention supported by the WFP Somalia and implemented by SEDO (Multilateral Fund Project.)
The project provided a modern water treatment device designed to improve the quality of irrigation water by reducing the harmful effects of salinity. This intervention is helping farmers protect their crops, while also reducing mineral buildup that can clog and damage drip irrigation systems.
By improving the quality of water available for irrigation, the intervention creates better conditions for crop production, supports more efficient use of irrigation infrastructure, and contributes to stronger agricultural productivity and household food security.
More importantly, this investment addresses a fundamental constraint to farming in an area where water quality can determine whether agricultural production is viable. It provides farmers with a practical solution that can continue delivering benefits beyond the project implementation period.
This is more than a water treatment device, it is an investment in productive land, resilient farming systems, and the future of food production in Laag.
