Project Rationalization
Provision of a sustainable and safe environment for IDPs is a pragmatic approach towards efficient aid delivery and protection of IDPs from any form of physical, mental, psychological, and social harm. SEDO contends that efficient aid delivery must be conducted based on the best standard which recognizes the inherent rights of the IDPs based on both SPHERE standards but also requisite humanitarian programming while protecting the dignity and opportunities of human beings.
Deep understanding of the socio-economic and political challenges facing the targeted IDPs, not from reported findings, but from practical experience in engagement with the IDP and conducting different forms of humanitarian activities within the IDP camps is key. This is what SEDO brings on board. The challenges facing Puntland IDPs are integrated. Apart from the normal socio-economic bottlenecks, the IDPs are also susceptible to other dangerous and illegal activities like illegal emigration, piracy, and other illegalities within the coastal environments and as such management of the camps requires knowledge beyond the traditional camp management strategies which are applicable in other localities and social set-up.
For the past 10 years, the organization has worked with a number of donors including UN Agencies, local communities including the fisheries association and the ministry of both fish and that of youths to provide sustainable livelihood and social protection programs to safeguard the rights, opportunities, and integrities of the at-risk populations including women, children, and youths.
SEDO is known for its activities and engagements within the Puntland IDPs and protection programs including anti-immigration laws and supporting protection programs including the SGBV agenda in the Bari region. The organization has also been actively involved in environmental protection through the planting of seedlings, sharing these seedlings with the communities, and planting of trees along the coastlines and areas of Bosaso to protect the soil cover and reduce desertification. Furthermore, its water catchment programs have benefited a number of communities within the Bari region and supported livelihood opportunities for the pastoralist communities. Its strategic and intentional education programs, both formal and non-formal – skills-based programs, targeting the out-so-school children have been developed to enhance equitable access, promote literacy level and inculcate social life skills among youths and teenagers. Training on governance and advocacy is targeted at increasing confidence level in the governance system and in a way support institutionalization of the governance system and supports peacebuilding and, specifically, state-building efforts.
The livelihood creation programs have been largely vocational skills training programs and provisional of CBT programs that target cash for work programs and unconditional food transfer depending on the targeted community and the level of needs prevalent. Social innovation training has been targeted at the youths through inspirational sessions to spur a burst of self-esteem among young people and inspire them to take a proactive look at the challenges facing them and develop innovative solutions in livelihood, environments, life skills, and entrepreneurship.
Lastly, training of the Natural Resource Management focusing on the fishing industry has produced quantum efforts. Engagement with the fishing industry stakeholders and other actors have provided viable entry points and strengthened the fishers through understanding principles of fish stocking, environmental conservation among other key skills. SEDO has the necessary experience in the project. its relationship with all actors and membership to critical clusters puts it at an advantageous position to effectively implement the project.
