Dawaco, Sanaag Region – SEDO Somalia has implemented an environmental conservation project in the village of Dawaco, located in Sanaag region, aimed at preventing soil erosion and land degradation. Soil erosion is a growing problem that worsens the recurring droughts affecting the region and Somalia as a whole, with devastating impacts on both people and livestock. The community has benefited from this project through training on environmental conservation, preventing land degradation, and protecting natural vegetation and water sources.
The project, supported by WFP, involved the construction of water catchment systems to harvest rainwater in valleys, which will benefit pastoralists and communities living in rural areas by providing water and pasture for their livestock. SEDO Somalia distributed tools to community members for the work, including watering cans, wheelbarrows, shovels, and sprayers. Approximately 150 water catchment sites were constructed to capture rainwater during the Gu season, allowing grass and fodder to grow for local livestock.
This project is making a significant contribution to environmental protection and the fight against land degradation, working alongside local communities to reduce the impacts of drought and climate change. SEDO Somalia will continue its environmental projects across various regions of Puntland State, supporting communities in improving their livelihoods while protecting natural resources, vegetation, and water sources.
