Bosaso, Somalia: In a concerted effort to strengthen food security and climate resilience, SEDO Somalia – in partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP) and Puntland Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation – has rolled out agricultural development projects across several communities in the Bari region, including Ceeldaahir, Laag, Karin, Barookhle, and Dulcadale.
The initiative focused on practical, high-impact interventions designed to improve farm productivity while protecting fragile ecosystems. Key activities included:
- Construction of gabions to shield farms from seasonal flood damage
- Distribution of soil testing kits and specialized training for local technicians
- Installation of water purification systems to reduce soil salinity
- Provision of chickens to support small-scale poultry farming
- Construction of two vegetable storage facilities to reduce post-harvest losses
- Supply of a chili grinding machine to add value to local produce
- Installation of irrigation pipelines for more efficient water use
- Distribution of plastic crates to safely transport vegetables to markets
Throughout the project, farmers received continuous, hands-on training in modern crop management and farming techniques. These sessions have helped families shift from subsistence methods to more productive, sustainable livelihoods.
At the project’s closing ceremony, Puntland’s Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation joined representatives from WFP and SEDO Somalia. Speakers recognized the remarkable progress achieved by local farmers and underscored the importance of cross-organizational cooperation to scale up agricultural development across the region.
SEDO Somalia remains firmly committed to environmental protection and long-term agricultural growth. The organization plans to launch additional projects in the coming months – with a continued focus on strengthening farmers’ skills, boosting production, and conserving natural resources for generations to come.
