Project Overview

The target locations of the three year FFA projects were under Ceerigaabo and Laasqorey districts which fall in Sanaag region of Somalia, they fall under east Golis livelihood zone where the main source of livelihood for the populations in the villages are pastoralist and rely on land for pasture and water.  However due to recurrence of drought and poor vegetation, the communities had been severely affected by droughts that has affected their main source of livelihood. As we refer to the report from FSNU to analysis the situation based on the selection criteria laid out by WFP for FFA projects.

SEDO has implemented four FFA projects in between 2018 to 2020, these projects included Soil bands and fodder production, and Water catchments rehabilitation, with participants of 1,409 and 8,454 Hh of beneficiaries.

The community have participated in the project activities in different level, where the community committee have a lead role in the selection process. Each project almost 50 percent of the project beneficiaries were women, also in the community committee, women were part of them in the decision making process.

Project impact to the community

In this period, our projects have addressed some extent of the objectives by making water accessible to the community through rehabilitation of the four watercatchments and increasing food security of the community, we also particularly invested livelihoods through soil bunds and fodder production, the life span of the projects were very short almost three months each, but these two activities of the projects have resulted a very good impact to the lives of the community.

Increased livelihood of the community

The number of soil bunds are 600, each with the dimension is 30mx1mx0.7m approxmately, In Fiqifuliye and Xingalool, Soil bands and folder production was the most appropriate project to be implemented because the area is in plateau where the water follows in a streams that could lead gullies unless water should be diverted to the pasture lands in which fodder has grown to this area, more than 60,000 animals have fed this fodder mostly sheep and goats. Livelihoods been invested for the community herds which increased the productivities of their animals in meat and milk which in turn supported the feed of children and elder persons, this also has increased the market value of the animals when sold.

344.558 MT of food distributed to the beneficiaries who had involved in the project activities where more than 8,454hh become food secured during the project period. Each Hh had received their ration each month. Since the project is to do hand work, disabilities couldn’t take part in the activities, but their relatives do the work for them, 20 were included in the project beneficiaries.

the livelihood of the community has increased because their livestock increased its productivities, and at the same time food had been distributed in each month of the activities by WFP as implemented by communities at least three months in each project which intern contributed to address the food insecurity for the target community. The villages were targeted because they were food-insecure areas, prone to recurring natural disasters (Drought), vulnerable to wide fluctuations in production and periodic food shortages within Somalia. These are the most food insecure populations as they have been receiving the drought assistance.

Environment is being protected during the soil bunds and folder production from formation of gullies in the pasture lands where in the rainy season, pasture for the animals have grown to feed them.

Water accessibility

In the last four years, SEDO has rehabilitated four water catchments for water accessibility and consumption, average capacity of three water catchments was 3000 meter cubic. More than 100,000 animals have got watering for free of charge where before the community had to pay money to for their animal watering in the boreholes, water catchments rehabilitation projects implemented in Sibaayo, Rad and Yacfar of Sanaag region.

Assets have been created to the community, where they can do their rehabilitation in the future to have clean and accessible water, the community have saved large amount of money or used it for other purposed like health and education instead buying water for their lives and animals. Each time of rainy season, the community use the water in different purposes including drinking, watering their small farms where they grow some necessary vegetables in the suburbs of the villages.

Sustainable Assets and Resilience

SEDO had ensured that after the completion of the implementation of FFA projects, the selected project management committees of seven persons in each project of which more than 50% were female are responsible for the maintenance of the assets created. They are responsible to coordinate with community elders and Local administrations to perform any required rehabilitation. The project management committee is responsible the projects as community representatives for handling and repairing. All NFIs/tools were handed over to the project management communities (PMC) to facilitate future rehabilitation activities with the presence of the local elders and local administrations for transparency. Communities will use these NFIs for any future activities to help them in their project’s sustainability. SEDO was about to be responsible for the training of the Project management committees (PMC) for them to afford the handling and repairing of the projects and the coordination procedure among the communities.
