Puntland, Somalia : SEDO Somalia, in partnership with Secure Fisheries and the Puntland Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, is implementing an initiative aimed at addressing the growing challenge of overfishing and unsustainable fishing practices along the coastal areas of Puntland.
The intervention responds to increasing pressure on marine ecosystems, which has contributed to a notable decline in key fish species, including fish and lobster populations. This trend poses a significant threat to the long-term health of marine biodiversity as well as the economic stability of coastal communities that depend on fishing as their primary source of livelihood.

Through this initiative, SEDO Somalia and its partners seek to promote sustainable fisheries management practices, strengthen community awareness on responsible fishing, and support the development of regulations and approaches that help restore and protect marine resources. The project also aims to enhance the capacity of local fishing communities to adopt sustainable practices that ensure long-term productivity of marine ecosystems.
The collaboration brings together technical expertise and institutional support to address environmental degradation while promoting sustainable livelihoods and food security in coastal regions. By focusing on both environmental protection and community resilience, the initiative contributes to balancing economic needs with the preservation of marine resources for future generations.
SEDO Somalia remains committed to working with national authorities, international partners, and local communities to promote sustainable fisheries management and protect Somalia’s marine ecosystem as a vital source of food, income, and biodiversity.
