Safety Nets for Locusts Response Projects
Since early 2020, desert locust swarms have swept across Somalia resulting in the worst invasion the country has seen in a quarter of a century.
Having already been impacted by food insecurity and climate extremes among other threats, Somalia was one of the countries most affected by the upsurge, which ravaged the entire region, and was the first to declare a state of emergency. The donor together with the Federal Government of Somalia has implemented multiple desert locust mitigation projects to control the spread of the disastrous pest, address immediate food needs and mitigate the impact on the livelihoods of vulnerable desert locust-affected communities. To achieve this, activities including input (seeds, tools) and cash distributions, air and ground control operations, surveys to monitor desert locust movements and the construction of monitoring centers have since been carried out.
SEDO was one of the organization contributed to the data collection and intervention, we registered 1997Households from desert locusts affected population in Sanaag region with the help of WFP and Government of Somalia. Each household will receive 60USD per month for six-month project. We assure that lives have changed due to this intervention.
