Laasqorey Communities Celebrate World Oceans Day 2023
World Ocean Day is celebrated on June 8th each year, dedicated to raising awareness about the crucial issues affecting the oceans and marine life worldwide. it is a day known as “World Ocean Day” where efforts are made to highlight the challenges facing our oceans and seas.
on June 8th, 2023, the fish community in laasqory city came together to celebrate World Ocean Day, a global event held by SEDO dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of the ocean and promoting conservation efforts. event highlights a beach cleanup initiative where the local community gathered to remove litter, and plastic debris, from the shoreline. participants of all ages rolled up their sleeves and worked together to make a positive impact on the coastal environment.
Furthermore, SEDO organized an educational workshop on fish quality control for 25 participants in laasqory, the objective of this educational workshop is to empower members of the Laasqorey fishery community their knowledge and skills to promote sustainable fishing practices, enhance resource management, and improve livelihoods on marine life and the importance of preserving oceans. experts in marine ecology and conservation shared insights and engaged the audience in interactive learning activities.
There are numerous challenges affecting the oceans such as climate change, overfishing, market access, lack of cold chain infrastructure, and illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, also there are issues related to the degradation of marine habitats. Addressing those challenges is crucial to achieving a sustainable and healthy ocean environment.

The day concluded with a closing ceremony where SEDO staff and local community leaders, environmental activists, and the Charmian of Laasqorey cooperatives officials made remarks emphasizing the importance of collective action in protecting oceans. participants were encouraged to continue their efforts beyond World Ocean Day and make sustainable choices to safeguard marine resources.
