In Habarshiro and Laako communities of Badhan District, Sanaag, the Food for Assets (FFA) intervention supported vulnerable households while investing in community assets that continue to benefit local communities beyond the project period.
A total of 562 households benefited from the intervention 322 households in Habarshiro and 240 households in Laako, with 10,302 people benefiting from the overall FFA project.
The project combined immediate food assistance with practical community-based activities designed to strengthen livelihoods, protect the environment, and improve access to essential infrastructure. Through community participation, beneficiaries contributed to activities that generated lasting assets for their communities.
Key achievements included:
- 6,000 mangrove trees planted, contributing to environmental restoration and protection of coastal ecosystems.
- 15 km of feeder roads repaired, improving connectivity and access for communities, farmers, traders, and essential services.
- 10,500 metres of water catchments rehabilitated, strengthening communities’ capacity to collect and retain water during periods of limited rainfall.
The intervention demonstrates the value of Food for Assets programming; addressing immediate food needs while simultaneously creating or restoring community assets that can support resilience, livelihoods, and environmental sustainability.
The impact extends beyond the assistance provided during the project. The rehabilitated water infrastructure, improved roads, and restored mangrove areas represent community assets that can continue serving people long after project activities have ended.
By linking food assistance with community-led development, the project helped communities meet immediate needs while building a stronger foundation for resilience against future climate and livelihood shocks.
